What is Photorejuvenation?
Photorejuvenation is a series of Intense Pulsed Light Treatments that improve the appearance of the skin which include the signs of sun-damage, age spots and skin texture. Skin conditions such as acne scars, large pores and fine lines can all be significantly improved by this treatment. It is commonly referred to as a “lunchtime” treatment that involves little or no “down time”. You can continue your day as planned.
What improvement will I see?
Individuals are very satisfied with the results. Most will have a 70% to 90% improvement in their appearance. With multiple treatments, the skin will feel smoother and have a more even skin tone.
How does the treatment work?
A series of gentle pulses of intense light are applied over the surface of the skin. The light penetrates through the skin without causing damage and is absorbed by the dilated vessels or dark pigmentation. The treatment uses heat to impair the lesion or vessel, and the skin can start the natural healing process. Dark pigmented spots will further darken for a few days before sloughing off, revealing fresher, less pigmented skin. These treatments can be administered as frequently as every three weeks.
What is a treatment like?
Treatments may vary from 15 to 45 minutes. The skin is cleansed first, and a cooling gel is applied to the area. The sensation of discomfort is minimal when the pulse of light is delivered. After the treatment, a cool compress is applied and a protective sun block. For individuals with sensitive skin, a topical anesthetic can be used.
Are there any possible side effects?
Side effects are rare. Reducing sun exposure for several weeks before and after treatment will greatly reduce the risk of complications. The skin may appear flushed, brown pigmented spots may appear darker and capillaries may be more visible after the treatment. In very rare circumstances, a light swelling and/or blistering can occur. Proper skin assessment will help minimize any potential complications.
How many treatments will I need?
For optimal results, a series of 5 treatments are recommended. Many individuals see significant improvement in 2 to 3 treatments; others require more. A follow-up treatment one or two times a year may be desired to maintain results.
